West Ham manager David Moyes has been talking about the transfer window in his latest Evening Standard column, and how he is targeting signings who can make an immediate impact in their fight against relegation.

West Ham's priority is a midfielder, with Jonjo Shelvey a target, while Harry Arter and Alfie Mawson are also in the manager's sights this month.

"So far, from what I’m hearing, it may not be as hectic a transfer window as usual this month," wrote Moyes.

"There will be a flutter of transfer activity at some stage because every club wants to sign players and you would expect Southampton, for example, to be active having received £75million from Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk.

"However, they have tended to go abroad to sign players so that money won’t necessarily come back into the Premier League.

I don’t think that money is the key to this window though - more availability.

"If you’re a club that is in a relatively safe position you can maybe consider moving on some players but it’s so tight that there are not many Premier League clubs that are in that fortunate category this season."

"We have to try to strengthen the squad. Ideally, I always look to the long term but such is our position this season that we have to look short term.

"We need players to come and help us now."
