David Luiz: Tottenham are playing very well – but Chelsea are top for a reason

David Luiz has warned Tottenham that Chelsea occupy top spot in the Premier League table "for a reason" after having their lead cut to four points.

Many predicted Antonio Conte's side would see out the title with minimal fuss during the run-in but the Blues have now lost two of their last four games.

Spurs, meanwhile, have ramped up the pressure on their rivals courtesy of seven consecutive top-flight victories.

Mauricio Pochettino's in-form side harbour hopes of catching Chelsea but Luiz is adamant he and his teammates remain in an enviable position.

"Tottenham are playing very well but also we are top of the table for a reason," he told Chelsea's official website.

"We still have to play a lot of football, so we need to look forward and play the next games."

Chelsea have rarely been taken out of their comfort zone this term but came up short against Manchester United.

Marcos Alonso's late withdrawal has been sighted as a factor in Chelsea's underwhelming performance but Luiz has dismissed such claims and believes defeat was down to an off day.

"He felt a bit sick so that is why we had to change but it didn’t affect the game because Marcos did not play," added the Brazilian.

"We lost because we did not play very well and it was not the Chelsea like before and sometimes this happens. Manchester United played better than us and they deserved to win."
