Crystal Palace have completed the free signing of former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini.

Alan Pardew was left with a place to fill in his Premier League squad after missing out on the loan signing of Jack Wilshere on deadline day and turned to Flamini.

The Frenchman, who won three FA Cups in north London and helped the Gunners reach the 2006 Champions League final, has signed a one-year deal with the Eagles.

He was released by the Gunners at the end of last season and underwent a medical on Wednesday ahead of the move and becomes Palace's sixth recruit since the end of last season.

Flamini said: "Crystal Palace is a very ambitious club with great players and I am looking forward to being part of that squad. It is a very interesting challenge for me and I am very excited to be here.

"I have had chance to discuss the move here with Alan Pardew and he really helped me make my decision."

Ahead of the deal's completion, Pardew revealed Palace faced strong competition from a number of clubs with a higher profile, but the former Newcastle boss was delighted to get the transfer over the line.

Pardew said: "I thought it was important to get another midfield player.

"His playing ability will help us but also his leadership qualities and his ability of how to win games in a passing style. I am delighted that we have secured a player of his stature.”
