Chelsea are still anxiously awaiting to discover the extent of Samuel Eto’o’s groin injury as they enter the busiest part of the season so far.

Eto’o was carried off on a stretcher in the 1-0 defeat to Basle on Tuesday night and is undergoing a scan on the problem today.

The Cameroon international, who joined on a free transfer from Anzhi Makhachkala in the summer, has started to show signs of form with four goals this term, but is in danger of being sidelined for the busy December schedule.

Chelsea face nine games in all competitions starting with a League encounter against Southampton on Sunday, although Fernando Torres is now back to full fitness after a knee injury.

The club are still looking to sign a striker in the new year and have stepped up their efforts to buy Porto forward Jackson Martinez.

Standard Sport revealed earlier this month that manager Jose Mourinho went to watch the 27-year-old in action for Colombia against Belgium.

Martinez has refused to sign a contract extension with the Portuguese club and it has been reported in Portugal that his agent Henrique Pompeo met with Chelsea executive board member and senior advisor to owner Roman Abramovich, Marina Granovskaia, in London earlier this week.
