Chelsea sign Axel Disasi in swift £39m transfer swoop after Wesley Fofana’s injury

Chelsea have announced the signing of Axel Disasi from Monaco.

The French defender agreed a six-year contract earlier this week.

Monaco will receive £38.6million for Disasi, who joined for just over £10m three years ago and helped the club to two third-place finishes in Ligue 1 during his time in the principality.

Mauricio Pochettino required a new centre-back after Wesley Fofana was struck down by a long-term knee injury.

Disasi will join Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Thiago Silva as the Chelsea manager’s premier defenders with Trevoh Chalobah likely to depart after this arrival.

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said: “Axel has showcased his quality over several seasons in France and that has deservedly led to recognition on the international stage.

“He is ready to take the next step in his career and we are delighted that will be with Chelsea. We welcome him to the club and look forward to him joining up with Mauricio Pochettino and his new teammates in the days ahead.”
