Chelsea’s “hire and fire” approach is failing now Manchester City pay the biggest transfer fees, according to Stan Collymore.

Antonio Conte, who won Chelsea’s fifth Premier League title in his first season, is the 10th different manager to be hired since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003.

Last season’s title win was the club’s 14th major trophy of the Abramovich era, but Collymore thinks Chelsea will taste less silverware success in the coming years if their managerial turnover continues at the current rate.

He wrote in the Mirror: “Big clubs need stability when it comes to their manager and the Blues’ model of hire and fire offers anything but stability.

“Finishing 10th, first, then potentially fourth, fifth or sixth shows it doesn’t work.

“Eventually they are going to run out of top-quality managers willing to do the job.”

Chelsea are understood to be looking at potential successors in case Conte leaves in the summer.

Collymore added: “Yes, Chelsea have won a lot of trophies over the years but only because they were paying the biggest wages and transfer fees for a time here until Manchester City came on to the scene.”
