David Luiz could return from a knee injury in time for Chelsea’s match with Arsenal in the Premier League on January 3.

Luiz has been ruled out since aggravating an old knee problem three weeks ago and has missed the last six matches.

But the Brazil international, who is wanted by Newcastle United on loan next month, has stepped up his recovery and has begun light training with the rest of the squad.

Coach Antonio Conte is keen not to rush the 30-year-old back too soon and he is expected to sit out the Christmas schedule, starting with the EFL Cup Quarter Final against Bournemouth at home.

But the trip to Arsenal in a fortnight has been earmarked as a possible date for him to make the squad again.

Conte said: "David has started to work on the pitch. I think he is progressing well. We must have a bit of patience for his recovery, but at the same time we hope to see him very soon with the first team."
