Chelsea have decided against holding an end-of-season awards night after their troubled season.

The club felt a ceremony at Stamford Bridge would be inappropriate given they are languishing in the bottom half of the table and will register their lowest-ever points total in the Premier League.

Awards for men’s player of the season, academy player of the season and goal of the season will instead be presented before their final home match against Newcastle on Sunday.

Thiago Silva is the frontrunner to win the player of the year award, which is voted for by supporters.

Chelsea have not held an in-person awards night since 2019. Last season's event was cancelled due to the sanctions placed on previous owner Roman Abramovich, while the pandemic scuppered plans the two years prior.

Mason Mount has been named player of the year in the past two seasons but has endured a difficult season.

Emma Hayes’s Chelsea Women side are on course to wrap up the WSL title on Saturday and will have a party after their successful season, in which they have also won the FA Cup.

The Blues will clinch their fourth successive WSL title with victory at bottom-side Reading.
