Chelsea have described themselves as “extremely disappointed” by the FA’s decision to suspend Diego Costa but have not confirmed whether they will make an appeal.

The champions will be without their star striker for three games after he was deemed guilty of violent conduct in the club’s 2-0 victory over Arsenal.

In a brief statement Chelsea confirmed: “We are extremely disappointed with the FA Regulatory Commission's decision to suspend Diego Costa.

“We will await their written reasons before commenting further.”

The punishment came about after an off-the-ball incident between Costa and Laurent Koscielny not spotted by Mike Dean during the game. Television replays indicated that he had grabbed the defender’s face, but Costa received a booking after a confrontation with Gabriel.

The FA confirmed that Costa had denied the claim of violent conduct but, should the decision not be overturned, he is now set to miss the club’s next three matches against Walsall, Newcastle and Southampton.

In an earlier decision the FA overturned the three game suspension given to Gabriel, who had received a straight red card in the game for kicking out at Costa.
