Chelsea coach Marco Ianni who sparked a touchline melee involving Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on Saturday has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association.

Ianni, who is Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri's second assistant coach, celebrated Ross Barkley's 96th-minute equaliser by running into United's technical area and appearing to goad Mourinho - which resulted in the United coach racing after him and having to be restrained by stewards.

Mourinho later revealed that Ianni and Sarri had both apologised for the incident, which he accepted, and put Ianni's actions down to "bad education".

Sarri admitted that Ianni was wrong to celebrate in the manner that he did but would not say if the Chelsea second assistant coach would face disciplinary action.

However, he FA have now decided to charge Ianni with improper conduct while formally warning Mourinho about his touchline behaviour.

In a statement on Monday, the football governing body said: "Chelsea coach Marco Ianni has been charged following the game against Manchester United on Saturday [20 October 2018].

"It is alleged that his behaviour in the 96th minute constituted improper conduct. He has until 6pm on Thursday 25 October 2018 to respond to the charge.

"In relation to this incident, José Mourinho has been formally reminded of his responsibilities whilst both clubs have received similar official reminders in terms of the behaviour expected of their staff and players at all times whilst in the technical area."
