Chelsea captain John Terry took the leading honour at the 2016 London Football Awards on Thursday after winning the "Outstanding Contribution to London Football" gong in Battersea.

Terry was recognised for his remarkable career to date at boyhood club Chelsea after an expert panel of journalists, former players and representatives of London's 15 professional clubs opted to hand the award to the 35-year-old.

The central defender, who was in attendance at the awards ceremony in London, joined the Blues as a 14-year-old and has gone on to win 16 major trophies - including the Champions League - at the club making him Chelsea's most successful captain ever.

Bob Wilson, founder of Willow Foundation, the organising charity behind the awards, told Standard Sport in February that Terry had shown inspirational qualities like few before him that ensured he was the rightful winner of the award this year.

"People only read the bad publicity about him," Wilson said. "I’m sure it concerns him but the John Terry I know loves football, is desperate to get everything he can out of it and has inspired his team-mates as one of game’s finest leaders, comparable with Tony Adams."

Meanwhile, Chelsea Ladies star Eniola Aluko was named as the London Women's Player of the Year for her contributions for Emma Hayes' side, beating teammates Fran Kirby and Katie Chapman and Arsenal pair Casey Stoney and Leah Williamson in the process.

Chelsea Ladies were the last remaining British team in the Women's Champions League this season while they achieved a famous double last year after becoming champions of the FA Women’s Super League for the first time and winning the FA Women’s Cup at Wembley Stadium.
