Northampton have confirmed they have received an approach from Charlton for manager Chris Wilder and assistant Alan Knill.

Jose Riga, who was in his second spell at the club, resigned on Saturday following the 3-0 defeat to Burnley at The Valley, which will host League One football next season.

The London club have endured a turbulent last four years, with multiple managerial changes, two relegations and near mutiny amongst fans directed towards the ownership.

Northampton, on the other hand, were crowned League Two champions and they finished the season unbeaten in 24 games in the division.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Northampton Town Football Club can confirm that this morning the club received an official approach from Charlton Athletic Football Club for the services of manager Chris Wilder and assistant manager Alan Knill.

"Due to release clauses in their existing contracts, the club have regrettably given permission for talks to take place."

Chairman Kelvin Thomas said: "As is common knowledge I have an excellent relationship with Chris and Alan and we as a club and myself personally would obviously be very sorry to see them go.

"We had already begun discussions about much improved new deals but I think it is fair to say we would not be able to match both the salary and the playing budget for next season that a club the size of Charlton could offer.

"We have known for a while Chris and Alan would be targets due to the fantastic success they have achieved, and together we have already turned down some interest from other clubs, but after discussions [on Monday morning] I respect their decision to meet Charlton.

"One of the things we have discussed with Charlton and Chris is that we want a quick decision so that if we have to, we can begin the process of finding a new manager in good time. We have a very strong, stable club with an excellent group of players, and it will be a very attractive job."

Wilder, who admitted promotion with the Cobblers was his greatest managerial achievement, feels the opportunity to talk to Charlton was one he had to consider.

He added: "My relationship with the chairman and the fans is going to make this a very difficult decision but I do feel at this stage of my career it is one I need to explore."
