Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez inspired Barcelona to victory over Atletico Madrid in the two teams' Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday - in a game that also saw Fernando Torres go from hero to villain at the Camp Nou.

Torres left the crowd in Barcelona stunned after he fired in the opener in the 24th minute to heap pressure on Luis Enrique's side, who just three days earlier suffered defeat at the hands of their arch rivals Real Madrid in el clasico.

However, the ex-Chelsea striker then went from hero to villain in the space of 10 minutes after being sent off for two bookable offences, which left Atletico with the daunting task of having to defend against Barcelona's fearsome attack, which eventually breached the visitors' defence in the second half.

Luis Suarez was the man to do the damage after firing in from close range to restore parity in the 62nd minute before the Uruguay star headed in the winning goal 12 minutes later to seal a 2-1 first-leg win for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich overcame Benfica 1-0 in their quarter-final first-leg tie at the Allianz Arena thanks to Arturo Vidal's early effort.

The Chile star handed the home side the lead after just two minutes to ensure that Bayern did not suffer defeat to a Portuguese side like last season, when the German giants were beaten by Porto 3-1 at the same stage of the competition.

While Barcelona and Bayern moved a step closer to playing in the semi-finals of the Champions League, Manchester City will attempt to do the same on Wednesday night when they travel to the Parc des Princes to face Paris Saint-Germain.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg will host Real Madrid in the other quarter-final tie.
