West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini could be facing a midfield crisis with summer signing Carlos Sanchez requiring surgery on knee ligament damage.

The Colombian, who signed from Fiorentina over the summer, was withdrawn during the 8-0 League Cup win over Macclesfield last week, and will now undergo an operation, leaving the Chilean short of options should any further problems occur.

Pellegrini has found success in recent weeks playing a midfield three of Declan Rice, Pedro Obiang and captain Mark Noble.

However, those three remain his only fit midfielders with Sanchez now facing a long spell on the sidelines and Jack Wilshere out for at least another month.

“Carlos had a problem with his knee ligament,” Pellegrini said.

“Maybe he will need a couple of weeks to be able to have surgery but he needs that.”

Pellegrini also revealed that Andy Carroll, injured since pre-season, is now working well again and could return to training in two weeks.

He added: “Andy is working a little bit more in the gym and on the pitch so I hope that he will play as soon as he can but he needs a couple of weeks more.”
