Ausburg boss Heiko Herrlich will miss his side’s Bundesliga return this weekend after breaking quarantine regulations to buy toothpaste.

Squads and staff have been staying in isolation in hotels all week ahead of the league’s resumption, travelling only to their respective training grounds, but Herrlich left the team base to go to a shop on Thursday.

Even more embarrassingly, Herrlich has not actually managed a game yet, having been appointed on March 10, two days after Ausburg lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich in their final game before the lockdown began.

Saturday’s meeting with Wolfsburg was due to be his first in the dugout, but he will no longer be present.

"I made a mistake by leaving the hotel," he said in a statement. "Even though I have followed all hygiene measures both when leaving the hotel and otherwise, I cannot undo this," he said. "In this situation, I was not able to act as a role model for my team and the public.

"I will therefore be consistent and stand by my mistake. Because of this misconduct, I will not be leading the training [on Friday] and will not be in charge of the team against Wolfsburg on Saturday."
