Arsenal vs Eintracht Frankfurt: Why are there no away fans at the Emirates tonight?

Tom Doyle28 November 2019

Unai Emery is under pressure tonight as Arsenal take on Eintracht Frankfurt at Emirates Stadium - but it could be a curious atmosphere for the under-fire coach.

Emery faces a key test tonight with the Spaniard's future at the club in doubt, and a poor result could force the Arsenal board into making a mid-season change despite publicly backing the manager.

While Arsenal fans could well turn on Emery in Eintracht put on a show, the visitors will have to do so without the support of their fans after Uefa barred them from attending this game.

Eintracht were handed the punishment after being charged with crowd disturbances, acts of damages and throwing objects following their tie at Vitoria Guimaraes on October 3.

As such, there will be no away end in the Emirates - but Arsenal have stepped up security to ensure Eintracht frans do not gatecrash proceedings.

Prior to the Uefa sanction, around 5,000 fans were expected to travel to London and there are fears some would still make the trip.

Arsenal moved to restrict those fans’ hopes of gaining entry by not selling tickets to Red Adult and Cannon Red Members, while the Friends & Family and Ticket Exchange Service is also not in operation for the game. The club have also warned that they will cancel the memberships of anyone who has sold their tickets on to Frankfurt supporters.

As well as that, Arsenal have laid on extra security to ensure there is not a repeat of the Cologne game in 2017, when visiting supporters clashed with stewards, causing kick-off to be delayed.

But Eintracht fans are not the only ones who will be missing out, with thousands of Arsenal supporters expected to stay away voluntarily - and the attendance could be as low as below 30,000 as Emery battles to save his job.
