Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta responds to Jorginho, Lucas Torreira and Thiago transfer links

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta refused to rule out a move for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho this summer while remaining tight-lipped over the future of Lucas Torreira.

The north London club have been heavily linked with a number of central midfielders of late, particularly Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar.

Standard Sport understands Arsenal's interest in both is genuine, but Sky Sports now report that Jorginho has emerged as a potential alternative.

Arteta was asked about the links to Jorginho in his press conference prior to their trip to Anfield on Monday.

The Spaniard acknowledged the club are looking at a number of options, but refused to talk directly about a player who has started in both of Chelsea's opening two Premier League games this season.

"We are still open to improve our team," Arteta said. "We are looking for different options depending on what happens with some of our players here so we are getting prepared just in case we need to do something."

Asked about the qualities he sees in Jorginho, Arteta added: "Sorry, but I cannot talk about players that play for a different team. [Discussing] their qualities is not appropriate from my side."

Arteta was also asked to provide an update on the future of Terreira, who is close to signing for Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan.

Standard Sport understands Torreira would be keen to join Atletico, but the deal has been complicated as the Spanish club are looking for a loan without an obligation to buy, while Arsenal are looking for a permanent move.

"No, we don’t have any updates on Lucas or any other player at the moment," Arteta said.

The Spaniard also remained coy when asked if Arsenal had tried to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich this summer, before the midfielder eventually completed a move to Liverpool.

"We don't discuss the things that we try to do in the market," he said.

Asked if Thiago is a player he admires, Arteta added: "Yeah, I really like him from my time that I was in Barcelona as well.

"A player with incredible personality, great talent, very special qualities to play in midfield. I think he's a great signing for Liverpool."
