Arsenal target Mark Schwarzer 'may force summer transfer'

Ambitions: Mark Schwarzer looks set to make a fresh bid for freedom when the transfer window reopens
11 April 2012

Mark Schwarzer has admitted he will try and force Fulham to sell him in January after having his dream move to Arsenal blocked.

The west London club rejected a £2million bid from the Gunners during the summer and turned down a subsequent transfer request from the Australia No1.

Although manager Mark Hughes refused to sanction a deal, the 37-year-old former Middlesbrough goalkeeper, whose Fulham contract expires at the end of the season, will make a fresh bid to leave the club when the transfer window reopens in the new year.

Speaking after arriving Down Under for Australia's upcoming friendly against Paraguay, Schwarzer said: "A lot can happen between now and January.

"What will be will be. If there's an opportunity in January then we'll have to explore it. This is the only time in my career I have ever tried to force an issue.

"I don't have time on my side. If you were a 30-year-old, you would walk away and say, 'Fair enough, I understand'.

"But I'm almost 38 and I want to fulfil an ambition. The sheer opportunity that was there - that was very flattering. But sometimes you've just got to get on with life."
