Arsenal expect midfielder Fabio Vieira to be fit for pre-season after he was forced to withdraw from the European Under-21 Championship due to a “medical issue”.

Vieira had been due to captain Portugal at the tournament in Georgia and Romania, and had travelled with the team ahead of facing Georgia on Wednesday.

He had not been involved in training, though, and over the weekend the Portuguese FA confirmed he had been replaced in the squad by Benfica winger Diego Moreira.

Arsenal have now confirmed Vieira withdrew due to a “medical issue” - but they expect him to return to full training within the next to weeks.

“I tried everything to be ready to play for my country,” Vieira said.

“I love to play for Portugal, but unfortunately it was not possible. I didn’t feel on top to play and help the team and the medical staff agreed.

“The most important thing is my health and this precaution was taken to reduce any risks. Now is the time to rest and be 100 per cent ready for pre-season, and next season.”

The Portuguese FA said in a statement: “The captain of the Equipe das Quinas presents a medical condition that, after evaluation and follow-up by the FPF's Health and Performance Unit (USP), it was decided not to make the athlete available for the Under-21 Euro.

“Since returning from England, the midfielder has been monitored by USP, having fulfilled the stipulated recovery plan.

“However, his situation is not evolving as expected for him to participate in the competition.”
