Arsenal analysis: Deja vu for Arsene Wenger as ruthless Manchester City rub salt into the wounds

1/33

Arsenal’s critics were left unanswered on Thursday night as Manchester City put another three past Arsene Wenger’s insipid side for the second time in five days.

Having been wholly embarrassed in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, those Arsenal fans who braved the freezing temperatures were expecting a response - a sign that all was not lost.

For the first 10 minutes you would have forgiven the hosts for feeling a little optimistic: Hector Bellerin was enjoying a little freedom against Danilo, and Ederson had been called into action on three occasions.

However, a rampant 20 minutes from the Premier League leaders left the home fans in no doubt as to their predicament.

With Arsenal's solid start to the game and a good reaction to going one goal down, it was fair to say Wenger was a little hard done by to be two behind - but no such claim could be made by half-time.

Boos greeted the whistle at the break, and also welcomed the Arsenal side back onto the pitch.

If Arsenal’s problems weren’t clear enough, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s saved second-half penalty had Wenger’s head in his hands once more.

While City fans celebrated just a second win at the Emirates, those in the home end were left facing the harsh reality of a 10-point gap to fourth-placed Tottenham - surely a step too far for this beleaguered Arsenal side.
