AFC Wimbledon have been given permission by Merton council to groundshare Plough Lane with rugby league side London Broncos.

Wimbledon chief executive Joe Palmer has said the move is “the start of a whole new era in the history of Wimbledon sport”.

The Broncos currently play at rugby union side Ealing Trailfinders’ stadium after years of sharing grounds with the likes of Brentford, Charlton and Fulham.

They now hope to have found a home by moving in with the Dons, who will also  explore the possibility of sharing resources with the Broncos, particularly in the commercial and marketing departments.

After building their new Plough Lane stadium, Wimbledon had been considering groundsharing and Merton council have now given them the green light to go ahead.

Dons chief executive Joe Palmer said: “This is brilliant news for us and the start of a whole new era in the history of Wimbledon sport.

“We have the chance to build something really special – on and off the pitch. Rugby League is a fast, exciting game and the Broncos will be playing against top teams. It’s a privilege to become partners with a club of such pedigree.

“Off the pitch, the Broncos share the same values as us. They very much want to be a valued and important part of the wider community. There’s so much we have in common – not least the fact that we’ve both been searching for a proper home for far too long.

“I really believe the Broncos will help enrich our lives at Plough Lane.”
