AFC Wimbledon and 17 other EFL clubs are due to appear in the House of Commons on Thursday to present their ideas on how the governance of football can be improved.

The Dons are part of a group, Fair Game, which was formed earlier this year and is continuing to grow in size.

Their aim is to improve the governance of football in England and Wales, with their philosophy built around the four principles of community, independent regulation, integrity and sustainability.

Fair Game’s influence is growing and on Thursday they were due to appear in the House of Commons as part of a special event live from the Grand Committee Room.

Over the course of the day there is due to be speeches and videos from politicians and the Fair Game team of clubs and experts, followed by a Q&A session.

Damian Collins MP and former Wimbledon midfielder John Scales are due to speak, with topics such as independent regulation, owners and directors’ test and parachute payments all due to be discussed.

Niall Couper, director of Fair Game and a board member of the Dons Trust, owners of AFC Wimbledon, told Standard Sport: “Now is the time to finally reboot our national game and create a secure future for all our clubs.

“No one wants to see another club disappear like Bury or Macclesfield.

“Clubs should not be spending more than they earn on player wages. It is not just unsustainable, it is reckless and it is playing Russian roulette with the history and traditions of our clubs.

“The parachute payments just make that problem worse. They need to be redistributed in a way that encourages and incentivises clubs to be at the heart of our communities.”
