Flintoff ready to return for England in the first Test against South Africa

13 April 2012

Andrew Flintoff faces one final hurdle before resuming his England career when he lines up for Lancashire in their Championship match against Sussex at Hove.

After four months of rehabilitation following a fourth operation on his ankle last autumn, Flintoff was set to play his first Test since the 2006-07 Ashes against New Zealand in May.

A side strain forced a further six-week lay-off, prompting concerns that he had suffered the injury as a result of trying too hard to prove his fitness.

England are desperate to pick Flintoff, primarily to give them a genuine pace option in the upcoming Test series with South Africa.

And, so long as he gets through the Sussex match, England will select him in the squad for the first Test at Lord's, starting on July 10.

England captains Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood will be in opposition today when Championship leaders Yorkshire face Durham at Headingley Carnegie.
