Fergie tough talk

Sir Alex Ferguson has issued a warning to rivals Arsenal and Chelsea by insisting that Manchester United will not suffer a repeat of last season's failure in the title race.

The Old Trafford manager, who watched Alan Smith miss from the spot on his debut last night as United lost a penalty shootout against Bayern Munich, said: "If we finish second or third, there's something wrong with the club."

Ferguson is still agonising over last season's third-place Premiership finish and early Champions League exit.

He said: "We know we can do better than that next season and we will. We won't have a season like that again, make no mistake."

A 58,000 crowd in Chicago saw Alan Smith have his penalty saved by Bayern Keeper Oliver Kahn last night after a below strength United drew 0-0 against the German club.
