Fergie fires warning

14 April 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson today warned new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho that spending large sums in the transfer market is not enough to bring him the Premiership title.

The Manchester United manager began the mind games with the league season still more than three weeks away when he questioned whether paying almost £70million for six new players this summer would prove to be money well spent for the Stamford Bridge club.

He said: "I don't think money is the issue. What matters is if they have picked the right players. That remains to be seen.

"The title race could be interesting.

Chelsea have a new coach and so do Liverpool. Arsenal and ourselves are becoming the old fuddy-duddies but we will be up there again."

Ferguson was renewing hostilities with Mourinho after he clashed with the former Porto boss following United's Champions League exit to that club last season.
