Federer's dream ruined by Berdych

Unknown Czech Tomas Berdych has ruined the dream tennis final in the Olympic men's event by knocking out Roger Federer, the World No1.

Olympic chiefs and television executives were hoping for a Federer versus Andy Roddick final.

But that is now ruined after Berdych beat the Wimbledon champion 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in their second-round match.

The 79th-ranked Berdych fought tigerishly on a cool Greek night to crush Federer's dream.

The Swiss top seed had stated all year that Olympic gold was his goal for 2004. Now he must go home empty-handed and turn his attentions to preparing for the US Open.
