Ex-England coach Brian Ashton given deadline to decide on RFU’s job offer

13 April 2012

Brian Ashton has been given until Monday to make a decision on his future at Twickenham, 10 weeks after England sacked him as head coach.

The RFU have offered to redeploy the Lancastrian, 61, in his previous role in charge of their national academy, supervising the development of future international players.

Job offer: Brian Ashton

Ashton has been in no rush to make up his mind, hardly surprising given his shabby treatment in the weeks before Martin Johnson's appointment to run the national team.

If the ex-coach decides not to revert to his old job at the academy, as seems increasingly likely given the delay, he will expect the RFU to honour his one-year rolling contract worth around £240,000.

Meanwhile, a confidential report into the events which led to Auckland Police investigating an allegation of rape and/or sexual assault against four England players on the New Zealand tour will be presented to the RFU's management board today.
