Euell looks for "fresh start"

14 April 2012

Jason Euell admits he is "looking for a fresh start at a new club" after being frustrated by his lack of first-team opportunities with Charlton last season.

The 28-year-old became the Addicks' record signing when he joined for £4.75million from Wimbledon during the summer of 2001, and went on to score 13 goals in his first season at The Valley.

However, the Jamaica international, who can play up front or as an attacking midfielder, has since fallen out of favour with manager Alan Curbishley and found his influence restricted during the last campaign when he made just seven starts - none of which came during 2005.

Despite the Charlton manager maintaining he was not looking to offload any of his squad this summer, Euell clearly feels his future lies away from The Valley.

"We've got talks coming up to try and get things sorted out. At the moment I'm looking for a fresh start at a new club, but if I end up staying at Charlton I will give my best for them next season," he said.

Euell added in the South London Press: "It's up in the air at the moment because last season was a non-existent one for me - I'm not prepared for another season like that.

"Because of that, I have to look at all my options. But things need to be sorted out within the next couple of weeks so that me and Charlton know where we stand."

Curbishley is, however, unlikely to allow Euell - or indeed anyone else - depart until he has landed his "four or five" targets ahead of the start of pre-season training next month.

The Charlton manager is desperate to avoid another disappointing end to a campaign, as the Addicks faded badly back from UEFA Cup contention to finish 11th last season following a run of just one victory from their final 14 Barclays Premiership games.

England Under-21 striker Darren Bent has already arrived in a £3million deal from Ipswich, while the south-east London club are also understood to be in talks with Blackburn frontman Jon Stead and tracking Norwich midfielder Damien Francis.

Reports also continue to suggest both newly-promoted Sunderland and Wigan will move for striker Francis Jeffers, who arrived from Arsenal for £2.6million last summer but failed to impress.
