Euell future under spotlight

14 April 2012

Jason Euell's future looks increasingly likely to lie away from Charlton.

The 28-year-old headed to The Valley for a club-record £4.75million deal from Wimbledon during the summer of 2001.

Despite proving an instant hit following 13 goals in his first season, the Jamaica international, who can play up front or as an attacking midfielder, has recently found his first-team opportunities limited after falling out of favour with manager Alan Curbishley.

And during the last campaign, Euell made just seven starts - none of which came in 2005, leading to the player declaring he was seeking "a fresh start at a new club".

Despite the Charlton manager maintaining he was not looking to offload any of the current squad this summer, it now seems the player could be allowed to leave.

Euell is scheduled for talks with the club following a holiday, and an announcement over his future could be made later this week.

"From what Jason has said, he would like pastures new - all players want to play," Euell's agent Tony Finnigan confirmed to The Press Association.

"Charlton are a great club, but it may turn out he will get a change of environment.

"However, if he does report back for pre-season training, then he will roll his sleeves up and get on with it, giving 110% if he is selected."

Curbishley is, though, reluctant to let anyone go before he has landed his "four or five" targets before the squad report back to Sparrow's Lane at the start of next month.

The Charlton manager is desperate to avoid another disappointing end to a campaign, as the Addicks faded badly back from UEFA Cup contention to finish 11th last season following a run of just one victory from their final 14 Barclays Premiership games.

Despite England Under-21 striker Darren Bent having already arrived in a £3million deal from Ipswich, Charlton were unsuccessful in their bid to lure Jon Stead to The Valley from Blackburn, the forward instead opting to stay in the north with a £1.8million switch to newly-promoted Sunderland.

The Addicks have also be linked with a move for Newcastle's England Under-21 midfielder Darren Ambrose as well as Inter Milan centre-back Gonzalo Sorondo, who spent last season on-loan at Crystal Palace, with Charlton likely to be tempted by a similar deal following the Eagles' relegation.
