Essex take control

14 April 2012

Essex made a solid start start as they chased a victory target of 205 in today's C&G Trophy quarterfinal against Worcestershire. Eight overs into their reply, the visitors had reached 24 without loss at New Road after Worcestershire had done well to pass the 200 mark.

Earlier, Navinder Bopara removed the dangerous Graeme Hick in a spell of two for 18 and leg spinner Danish Kaneira dismissed Vikram Solanki for 34 as the hosts slumped to 75 for five.

Skipper Ben Smith (54) and veteran David Leatherdale (42) repaired the damage with a stand of 76 but once they were dismissed left-armer Scott Brant wrapped up the tail to finish with three for 19.

The South African fast bowler missed Sunday's Totesport League defeat by Nottinghamshire at Lord's because of an ankle problem but is rated "a bit better than 50-50" to face holders Gloucestershire in the knock-out competition. "Nantie had been a terrific influence for us this season and I know he will do all he can to make it tomorrow," said coach John Emburey.

Middlesex are at least guaranteed one welcome comeback with captain Andrew Strauss briefly returning to domestic duty after three Test matches against New Zealand.

"I'm optimistic because our one-day form has been good this season," added Emburey.
