England secure series victory

14 April 2012

England completed an emphatic 167-run victory over Pakistan in the third npower Test to ensure their first series victory since last year's Ashes triumph.

Chasing an historic victory target of 323 on the final day at Headingley, which would have been the second highest successful fourth-innings total ever at the ground, Pakistan crumbled to 155 all out by mid-afternoon.

Their demise clinched England's first home series win over Pakistan since 1982 following their similarly emphatic innings-and-120-run triumph in the previous Test at Old Trafford.

Only Younis Khan, who battled for nearly two hours for his 41, showed any resistance while captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, prevented from batting until number seven because of the amount of time he was off the field yesterday with chest pains, hit 37.

Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar, a five-wicket hero in the second innings at Old Trafford, again made a key contribution and finished off the victory by having Inzamam stumped by Chris Read to finish with figures of three for 39.

Lancashire seamer Sajid Mahmood, preferred to Jon Lewis for this Test, justified his inclusion by grabbing four for 22, his Test best figures.
