Duo share lead at 84 Lumber Classic

12 April 2012

Charles Howell III found his old form for a day and vaulted into a share of the lead after Saturday's third round of the 84 Lumber Classic.

Howell, who not long ago was widely considered a superstar in the making, showed that perhaps he still might be with a 4-under-par 68 in benign conditions on the Mystic Rock course at Nemacolin Resort.

He joined 2003 British Open champion Ben Curtis (69) at 12-under 204 with one round left, while 11 others were poised within three shots on a jam-packed leaderboard.

Hunter Mahan (67), Robert Garrigus (68) and Greg Owen (68) were one shot behind, with Ryan Moore (71), who shared the halfway lead with Curtis, among a group two back.

Howell, who recently returned to old coach David Leadbetter after a stint with another instructor, finished ninth on the PGA Tour money list in 2002, the year he recorded his first victory, but he hasn't won since.

He has had just one top-10 finish this year, a second-place at New Orleans in April.
