De Mevius takes Dakar Rally lead

Gregoire De Mevius stormed into the lead of the 24th Dakar Rally and insisted he can win the event.

De Mevius took the overall lead in the car category, completing the 35-kilometre special stage in 24 minutes 22 seconds, 56 seconds clear of second-placed Jean-Louis Schlesser.

He said: "This year, for sure, we have a car capable of winning. But I am well-placed to know that in rally-raiding the theory and the practice are often very different."
