Dawson set for new deal

England discard Matt Dawson is set to be offered a new contract with European champions Wasps.

The World Cup-winning scrum-half has impressed since joining the club from Northampton on a one-year deal in the summer.

The 31-year-old was signed primarily as cover for the injured Rob Howley but with the former Wales international since forced into retirement, Wasps are keen to keen to keep Dawson on.

Wasps coach Warren Gatland told the Daily Mirror: "We have not yet offered Matt a new contract but we will be doing so.

"I'm very happy with his contribution and I think he's good enough to play for another couple of years."

Dawson hopes the new contract will enable him to revive his England career.

Dawson has been out of the international picture since missing a training session in September because of TV commitments.

He said: "Rugby is still my priority and there's still a burning desire within me to play the best rugby I possibly can.

"I know within myself, if I was given the chance I could play for England again.

"I know I'm fit enough, I'm strong enough, I'm skilful enough."
