Darlington want to sign Gazza
Darlington chairman George Reynolds is trying to arrange a financial deal which could see Paul Gascoigne return to English football.
The Quakers owner is a huge admirer of the former England international and believes he can lure the player back to his native north-east.
The 36-year-old has been without a club since leaving Chinese side Gansu Tianma six months ago.
Reynolds said: "I love Paul as a player and as a person and he would be a massively popular player here. We have always been interested in bringing him here and I think he looks quite fit."
However, Reynolds is concerned that Gascoigne's wage demands could scupper a potential move.
The Football League have launched a pilot scheme this season which prevents Third Division clubs from exceeding 60% of turnover on players' wages, but Reynolds is hopeful a deal can be struck.
He said: "My hands are tied to an extent but I could maybe work out some financial deal with him. He would definitely bring the crowds in to the new stadium and get this club back on its feet."
