Surrey County Cricket Club have donated £10,000 to the Australian bushfire relief and recovery efforts.

Cricket has fundraised heavily for the efforts, with Shane Warne raising more than £500,000 at auction for his Baggy Green cap, and Cricket Australia organising an all-star match before the Big Bash League Final.

Warne and Ricky Ponting will captain the teams in that match. Ponting played for Surrey, which was part of the reason to donate to the cause.

Richard Thompson, Surrey chairman, said: “The images of the suffering and devastation being wrought by the fires that have been beamed across the globe are utterly heartbreaking.

“Surrey CCC has many great friends in Australia – and often send our young players to develop their games in the country during the English winter.

"This donation is a tiny token of our appreciation for all the work being done to save lives and limit the damage caused by this tragedy.

“We hope next month’s game is a huge success and this wonderful country is able to do everything possible to right itself and help those effected by these fires."
