Cricket stars across the world expressed support for Phil Hughes as the Australian Test batsman fought for his life today.

Hughes was in a critical condition after undergoing surgery to a head injury and put into an induced coma.

The left-hander, who will be 26 on Sunday and has played 26 Tests, was struck on the side of the helmet while batting for South Australia against New South Wales in Sydney. He collapsed after failing to avoid a short delivery from pace bowler Sean Abbott.

Hughes was immediately surrounded by opposition players and umpires, who called for help.

A helicopter arrived but Hughes, who had scored 63, was taken to Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital by ambulance, accompanied by Australia team doctor Peter Brukner, who said: “Phillip sustained a severe head injury. He remains in a critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“Unless there is any significant change there will be no further updates on his condition until tomorrow.”

Australian cricket writer Peter Lalor told BBC Radio 5 live: “The worst part of it was they had to give him mouth to mouth in front of the members’ stand.”

The match was abandoned.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad wrote on Twitter: “Awful news about Phil Hughes. Fight hard, everyone’s thoughts are with you.”

Team-mate Jimmy Anderson added: “Sickening news. Praying for him.”
