Jimmy Anderson has backed Stuart Broad to succeed him as the most prolific Test bowler in England’s history.

Anderson went past Sir Ian Botham’s mark of 383 wickets during the match against West Indies in Antigua in April, before moving to 400 against New Zealand at Headingley a month later.

The 32-year-old’s tally is 406 but Broad, who is three years younger, has taken 292.

In the Tests they have played together, England’s new-ball bowlers have shared 577 wickets and ahead of this week’s second Ashes Test at Lord’s, Anderson expects Broad to surpass him.

“He will certainly get to 400 wickets if he can stay fit and who knows how far he can go past that,” Anderson told Standard Sport.

“I really enjoy playing with him and if he gets past me, that’s great. There is no rivalry there. We have a huge amount of respect for each other. I would be more than happy if he did it.

“We complement each other very well as bowlers. If one of us gets a feeling that one guy is on a hot streak, the other one can work to tie up an end. We do work well together in that way and that is why we have had success together.”
