I'd be shocked if England's Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales don't return after Bangladesh tour, says Jason Roy

Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales will be welcomed back with open arms to the England set-up despite missing the Bangladesh tour, according to Jason Roy.

Ahead of the squad’s departure tomorrow, one-day specialist Roy said he backed the decision of the pair to opt out on safety grounds, with no country having toured Bangladesh since 20 people were killed in a siege at a cafe in Dhaka in July.

The 26-year-old insisted he had no fears over his own safety despite some initial concerns.

“Of course there was a bit of doubt but once I’d spoken to the people I needed to speak to I was always going to go,” said Roy. “As for the players who pulled out, that’s up to them. We had numerous discussions and we all stand together but there’s no doubt we’ll miss them.

“Eoin’s a huge cog as captain and I’ve really enjoyed opening the batting with Alex. But they’re too good not to have in the team long-term and I’d be extremely disappointed and surprised if they didn’t come back into the side.”

Roy has formed a formidable pairing with Hales but he said a change in partner wouldn’t affect his game.

“We’ve had great fun but this gives someone else an opportunity,” said Roy, speaking at an event to mark next year’s ICC Champions Trophy.

Roy will return home after the three one-dayers, the first of which is scheduled for Dhaka on October 7. He warned Bangladesh would be a tough side on home soil but that it posed “another chance for us to win another series away”.

England reached the final of the World Twenty20 in April and have since enjoyed limited-overs series wins over both Sri Lanka and Pakistan. But Roy warned neither he nor England were the finished article yet. “I absolutely feel there’s more to come,” he added.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 will be held in England and Wales between June 1-18. The ticket ballot closes on Friday. To apply for tickets, visit ICC-cricket.com/tickets
