The first assignment of England’s uncertain winter, a white-ball tour of South Africa next month, could be announced in the next week, with the host government close to approving it.

South African cricket is in disarray, with the Board appearing in Parliament again today to explain its governance, but reports in South Africa suggest that permission for England’s tour could be granted imminently.

England are due to be based in Cape Town for six matches (three ODIs and three T20s) at Newlands and Paarl. Once permission is granted, there remains much to iron out, including the touring team’s quarantine arrangements, but the expectation is that this could be sorted by the end of the week.

There is also still considerable uncertainty around the remainder of England’s winter. The board hope to hold a red-ball camp in the UAE before Christmas followed by Tests against Sri Lanka (comments from coach Mickey Arthur yesterday raised optimism around that tour) and India from January.
