Joe Denly has been ruled out of England's final two Royal London Series matches against Ireland having missed Thursday's opener after struggling with back spasms.

The 34-year-old was dropped from England's Test squad following sub-par scores of 18 and 29 in their opening match against the West Indies earlier in July, subsequently drafted into the white-ball side.

The batsman suffered a back injury in training, however, and was replaced by Kent team-mate Sam Billings, who then hit a one-day international best of 67 not out as England cruised to a six-wicket victory.

England have now confirmed Liam Livingstone will replace the injured Denly in the 14-man squad for Saturday's second match of the series.

A brief statement read: "Joe Denly has been ruled out of the Royal London Series against Ireland after suffering back spasms in training on Wednesday. He is replaced in the squad by Liam Livingstone."

England could wrap up with series with another win at the Ageas Bowl, which would see them take an early 10 points in the inaugural World Cup Super League.

The home side, alongside visitors Ireland, are competing with 10 other nations, of which each will play eight games, four at home and four away, with the top seven to earn automatic qualification to the 2023 World Cup in India.
