England will be without Jason Roy for the three-match T20 series against Pakistan in Manchester which begins on Friday.

Roy has a side strain and is expected to be available for the six white-ball matches against Australia next month. In his absence, Tom Banton could open alongside Jonny Bairstow.

In other injury news for Surrey and England batsmen, Ollie Pope is set to see a specialist after having a scan on his left shoulder, with fears growing that the injury could be significant.

Pope, 22, left the field early on the penultimate day of England’s series against Pakistan after diving awkwardly.

Pope suffered a serious injury to the same shoulder in April 2019, which kept him out for four months.

He is set to miss the remainder of the season with Surrey but with England’s Test players not set to play before Christmas (they are set to have a camp in Dubai in December ahead of Tests in the subcontinent), Pope will have time to recover.

Among Surrey’s remaining games is their Vitality Blast clash against Hampshire next Thursday which, pending final confirmation, is set to be one of the government’s pilot events for the return of fans.

Surrey, who will be captained by Gareth Batty, will have new signing Laurie Evans in the ranks for the Blast, which helps cover the loss of Pope.

The Blast begins on Thursday night with seven fixtures as this condensed summer shifts from a red-ball focus to white.

Joe Root will play for Yorkshire tonight as he looks to restate his international T20 credentials, while other England Test players such as Zak Crawley will return for their counties on Friday.
