Superb performance in semi-final saw India star finish first

Mohammed Shami has been crowned the leading wicket taker at the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

A superb performance in India's semi-final win over New Zealand, bagging a total of seven wickets, on Wednesday put him past Australia spinner Adam Zampa - having gone for less than half the runs.

Zampa did not add to his tally as he went wicketless in the semi-final against South Africa, but he went briefly level on 23 wickets with a strong showing in the final on Sunday.

Shami then took the first wicket of David Warner to virtually ensure he will top the standings.

Dilshan Madushanka, who took a five-wicket haul against India, set the pace earlier in the tournament with 21 wickets, but Sri Lanka's group-stage exit ensured he could not compete at the top heading into the knockout stages. Gerald Coetzee shone for South Africa throughout the tournament, but he could not lead his country to a semi-final win.
