Amiss insists Jonathan Trott will force his way back into England team

Jonathan Trott has been backed to make a successful return to the England team by former international batsman Dennis Amiss.

Trott returned home from Australia last November after one Test of the Ashes series, suffering from a stress-related illness, but he is making a good recovery and is confident of starting the new county season with Warwickshire in April.

Last week, Trott is believed to have held a meeting with Paul Downton, the new managing director of England cricket, to discuss the future. Like Trott, Amiss made his name playing for Warwickshire and England, playing 50 Tests between 1966 and 1977.

He said: “His hunger, determination and dedication to cricket has been evident throughout his career and I know he will make a successful return for both county and country.

“He will return to play for Warwickshire fit and ready to score big runs and force his way back into England’s plans.”

Amiss has been named chairman for Trott’s Benefit Year, which takes place over the coming months.

Colin Povey, the chief executive of Warwickshire, has been similarly supportive of Trott’s ambition to return.

He said: “Everyone at the club is really looking forward to welcoming Jonathan back.

“He is as committed to helping Warwickshire succeed as he is England and I am certain he will return fitter and stronger.”

Trott has played 49 Tests, averaging 46, since making his debut in 2009.

In that Test at The Oval, he scored a second-innings century that helped England reclaim the Ashes. Amiss added: “That tells you everything you need to know about the man.”
