Surrey’s Alec Stewart is one of the names in the frame as England launch a recruitment process to replace director of cricket Andrew Strauss, who stepped down on Wednesday.

Strauss stepped aside to care for his wife Ruth, who has cancer, but will remain at the ECB in a flexible role that will include helping search for his successor.

The former England captain says he is no longer able to fully focus on the national setup while supporting his family, ending a three-and-a-half-year spell in the role.

As Surrey director of cricket, Stewart masterminded this season’s Championship triumph.

Ashley Giles, the former England spinner and now head of sport at Warwickshire, is another contender while Angus Fraser and Mick Newell, both county directors of cricket and former England selectors, could also be considered.

Andy Flower, the former head coach, effectively replaced Strauss this summer and will continue in charge until January, but is thought not to be interested in taking the job full-time.
