County cricket round-up

Surrey v Midd'x

Graham Thorpe made light of his England omission to lead Surrey's recovery on the first day at Guildford.
Middlesex elected to field and had the champions in trouble after dismissing openers Ian Ward (10) and Jonathan Batty (2) inside the first 10 overs.
But Thorpe joined Mark Ramprakash and they added 75 for the third wicket, taking Surrey to 95 for two at lunch.

Darren Stevens got visitors Leicestershire off to a fine start at Southend with an unbeaten 67 from 117 balls.
James Middlebrook took the only wicket to fall when opener John Maunders was caught by James Foster six short of a half century.
But Darren Maddy steadied the ship with 16 from 22 balls as the visitors seemed set to pile up a big score.
