Bringing Paul Grayson into the Essex attack ended a dogged eighth-wicket stand this morning. Grayson came in for Jonathan Dakin and then dismissed Mushtaq Ahmed to end his partnership with James Kirtley, which had added 41 runs to an overnight 282 for eight.

Surrey

Mark Ramprakash moved on to 143 not out at Edgbaston today as Surrey pushed on to a 467-run lead over Warwickshire. With Adam Hollioake unbeaten on 30 alongside him, the pair put on 44 runs in a promising partnership. Alec Stewart was the only wicket to fall today, for 45.

Kent

Jason Gallian and Russell Warren came through the first hour of this morning's play unscathed as Notts battled to avoid defeat against Kent at Maidstone. Notts, 27 for two overnight, need a massive 625 to win after Kent declared at 418 for three yesterday.

Middlesex

Brad Hodge and David Masters took their fourthwicket partnership to 54 runs this morning as Leicestershire continued their reply to Middlesex's massive first-innings total.
The Australian Hodge made the bulk of the runs when he moved onto 32 from an overnight 4.
