Colin Montgomerie looking forward to Open

13 April 2012

One round does not make a comeback, but if Colin Montgomerie goes on to do more than lead Europe in the Ryder Cup this year there is no doubt where it all started.

Just over two weeks before his 47th birthday Montgomerie shot a course record-equalling 62 at Sunningdale New yesterday to qualify for next month's Open at St Andrews.

It means a return to the scene of his runners-up finish to Tiger Woods five years ago, a 21st successive appearance in the event - right back to his debut at the Home of Golf in 1990 - and a 70th major.

"This will probably be my last opportunity to play The Open at St Andrews," he said. "I'm just glad the opportunity has been taken.

"It's a special place no question and of course I'll draw on last time. You finish second to the best player that's ever played the game and you go with a bit of confidence.

"It's home, I've got good support and I'm looking forward to it."
