Chirac 'hijacks' English victory

French president Jacques Chirac was accused of trying to hijack England's triumph after proclaiming it a 'victory for Europe'.

France were knocked out by England in the semi-finals and most of their fans supported Australia in the final.

But Mr Chirac told Tony Blair: 'This deserved victory is also a victory for Europe. Thanks to the extraordinary talent of the English players, the World Cup is coming to the northern hemisphere for the first time.'

Tory MP Gerald Howarth said: 'It takes the extraordinary nerve of the French to hijack England's victory.'
