Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse marks richest day of British racehorse calendar

The richest day of the British racing calendar is almost upon us as QIPCO British Champions Day comes to Ascot Racecourse.

The meet, now in its eighth year, signals the end of the European flat racing season on October 20.

There is a total of £4.35 million in prize money across five categories; Sprint, Mile, Middle Distance, Long Distance and Fillies and Mares.

The QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup is the first race up at 1.25pm, run over 1m 7f and with £500,000 on offer. Stradivarius, Kew Gardens and Thomas Hobson are the horses to watch.

Next up is the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes at 2pm and is one of the fastest sprints in Europe at just 6f. The total prize money is £600,000 with Librisa Breeze and The Tin Man the expected contenders.

At 2.40pm is the QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes and it's £600,000 prize money. Keep an eye for Hydrangea and Lah Ti Dar over the 1m 4f race.

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes is at 3.15pm with £1.1 million on offer in the richest mile race in Europe. Recoletos and Accidental Agent are among the contenders.

The final race is the QIPCO Champion Stakes at 3.50pm with £1.3m in prize money, making it the most valuable mile-and-a-quarter race in Europe. Cracksman and Roaring Lion the horses to watch
